I've been a bit dissapointed tbh, it's good, but just lacks... something. Half-a-face-man's introduction and (the brilliant) Al Capone's gang cracking heads got me excited but since then it's gone back to feeling like an impeccably made costume drama with a filter over everything that stops me actually engaging with it. Rex Banner (I don't remember his actual name but you know who I mean) is the one character I do get excited to see him hitting the bottle and screwing Nucky's ex the other week was a real treat . You think of shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men and the way they slowly build up their worlds, strands and politics as they go on, but Boardwalk Empire is more like The Phantom Menace, it throws you straight into a massive world with loads of seemingly important players, there's a kind of sketchy undefined lead character who you (or I anyway) find it hard to give too much of a shit about, and all the politics! I'd like to know who I'm dealing with before I can start caring about how the wranglings are going to effect them (It's a billion times better than The Phantom Menace btw ). Think I'm going to see this season through then leave it there (then when everyone's bumming it senseless in 5 years I'll sheepishly pick up the DVDs and pretend I was into it from the start). I've been pretty harsh here tbf, but it's just that with the names involved my expectations were very high. It IS a very good watch, but with so much high quality US tv like Mad Men, The Shield, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, Six Feet Under still to finish/start I feel like I'm wasting my time a bit running with the middle of the pack

Last episode was really good, I thought. That copper who Rex Banner plays is a fucking nutjob btw.

Yeah, he's nuts Worst. Baptism. Ever. You could be right about season 2 and beyond - I'd definitely come back to it sometime if it gets good write-ups in the future, but I think for me it's a bit of a victim of it's own ambition at the moment, so many storylines so little time.
