I don't know what I would have said in the past, probably at different points Oasis, Strokes, Mando Diao, BRMC or Wilco. But this is not a "your favourite band" question, it's the band that feels closer to you, that you want everyone to love or at least to treact respectfully. And would make you jump out with a sword to cut some throats and stand on their side.

Today I choose Mujeres, because they've been going for like 15 years, starting like some kind of great Garage Rock worship and after working really really hard, losing a 4th member and switching from English to Spanish, they've finally built an amazing career. Managing to accidentally create a very peculiar style of 60s Spanish ye-yé mixed with 00s garage and an emotional lyrical style with simple heart on sleeve sentences using semi retro vocabulary that always hit the spot. Also, I would say you might find it more in their ethics than on their sound, but they're big GBV nutcases.

Their shows are always a big celebration, a mix of big pogos and smiles and love, everyone leaving with a renewed faith on human beings. Now they're also acting as godparents of a big guitar movement here in Spain totally unthinkable 10 years ago, with some of the bands inspired by them already headlining festivals. A big achievement per se, but even more amazing if you add they're always incredibly nice and close to people and never left the DIY attitude on every aspect of their work: artwork, videos, tours, special fan club, record parties... Of course, there would be something lost in translation if any of you give them a chance, so it's not my goal, just to propose a toast to them.

The artist I'd choose would probably be Joni Mitchell. She's been eternally misunderstood, and you can't talk to anybody about her without somebody else magically teleporting in the middle of the conversation going "Yeah but she doesn't hold a candle to BOB DYLAN!! Have you heard Blood on the Tracks? When I hear that, I get #THEFEELS!!"

Truth is, we are really comparing helicopters and submarines.

After Court and Spark (which I don't like much, overproduced), she had a run of extremely experimental LPs that were far beyond what any other songwriter was doing in the 70s. In some of her records, she came up with a different guitar tuning for each of the songs, often making them un-coverable for other musicians (and that's why you don't hear these tracks in tribute albums).
Musically she was so advanced that she was embraced by the jazz community (possibly the closest thing to a racist satanic KKK cult in music). I don't remember another rock'n'roll artist being as widely respected by jazz musicians as she is.
Her backing band was made of Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter, at the time the most prominent jazz players in their respective instrument.
Even fucking CHARLES MINGUS, the greatest band leader and jazz composer after Duke Ellington passed, thought she was brilliant and wanted her to curate his last record before he died.

I mean, it fine if people don't like her, but hearing people still associating her with Bob Dylan or worse, James Taylor, proves how much over their heads her music goes.

Super Furry Animals. I go through phases of listening to them but for me they'll always be the perfect blend of experimentation & pop perfection.

& if I hear Eddie Murphy mention that he saw them support the manic street preachers at the Millennium stadium & they were shit one more time I'll smash every fucking tile off his roof.

If I’m taking the obvious ones (Beatles, oasis, Dylan) out and my Canadian blind spots out (tragically hip, Sloan, sadies), I’d probably pick Doves. 5 albums, all brilliant. Or the hives. Or supergrass. One of those 3, I guess.

The coral - although I flicked through a new record of theres that popped up and its was pretty underwhelming tbh -But as a whole, a totally underrated band and a band that got me into a whole lot of other stuff and inspired me massively as a (pretty average!) songwriter.

Possibly The Walkmen. My love for them was rekindled this year after the APE live show.

A band that is SO much more than The Rat. And Hamilton Leithauser has possibly the best shout/sing voice around.
