I was reading an article on the Criterion Collection earlier today.
Criterion is a terribly hip and moderately annoying company that re-releases old and contemporary films - their catalogue has become basically a "pantheon" of films for enthusiasts.
I thought about doing the same: an ever-expanding list of significant albums that would constitute a "perfect library" of the last 100 years of music from all over the world.
I thought about starting with 25 picks, which should be a number we can manage.
Ideally, the list would extend in the hundreds or thousands.
So I'm asking whoever wants to participate to pick 25 albums that they feel should be in a perfect music library.
Mind that these don't have to be your "top-25" albums of all time, but 25 albums you think belong in a music pantheon. Then according to everyone's suggestions, we pick a first batch of 25. (note: this will not be vote-based like the end of the year lists).
Some instructions:
- Try and pick one album per artist for the time being. If we start making lists with 6 Beatles albums the experiments fails immediately and one of you dies.
- Variety (different decades, genres, countries etc) is very welcome.
- Greatest Hits, Best Of's and Compilations are prohibited, unless they mostly focus on non-abum tracks (for example, it's fine to include The Complete Robert Johnson, Hatful of Hollow or even The Masterplan, but not to include The Beatles' Blue/Red albums).
