And a different question. Do you have any records that you bought for face value (or cheaper) but are now worth a bit?
I have a few.
The debut Noname album was only self released on vinyl and only on a limited run. It cost about £20 and mint or near mint copies are listed on Discogs for between £160 and a bloody thousand pounds.
Similarly with Endless, the album that Frank Ocean released as an accompaniment to that weird video he did. Bought for twenty something and now mint copies (mine is still sealed) are listed between €350 and well over a grand.
But the best buy of all was a few years back from a small street market in East Dulwich. I used to get a few bits from this old guy as they were always cheap and in really great condition- he clearly looked after his records. Anyway, he had a terrific copy of Abbey Road and I paid a fiver. It was only when I got it home and added to Discogs that I realised it’s a rare misprint- where the Apple Logo on the back doesn’t align with the text and one of the tracks isn’t listed. Anyway- VG+ copies go for anywhere between £150 and £500.

I'll let Rod tell you all about my original copy of Led Zeppelin with the orange lettering that I bought for 1 pound.

I have a few that have grown in price, though nowhere near the level of your profit. Shack's The Corner of Miles & Gil, which I got new in 2006 from a shop in Barcelona while visiting the city for a festival. I must have paid around €25 for it, which at the time was an exorbitant amount of money for new vinyl, but a near mint copy like mine nowadays fetches €220 and upwards. Autumn Bird Songs (book + 10" LP) by Jason Molina, which I got in 2012 when it was released. Acquiring this wasn't easy, as it was a crowdfunded release and part of the money was going towards Jason's medical bills. Being my first (and to this day only) Kickstarter thing I ever participated in, I was not sure I would receive the thing eventually, but I did. Less than a year later Jason Molina passed away and the book + LP shot up in price. A beat-up copy will cost you around €230 now. Think's Think Pink, an original 1970 US pressing. When I got into vinyl back in 2003, I found this LP in a local store in Rome... it was the only psychedelic record in the shop I could afford at a whopping €30, so I got it, despite never really liking it all that much. Good looking copies now sell for €130-€230 depending on condition, but availability is always scarce. Back in 2014 I got heavily into Brazilian music, also thanks to the fact that I was learning the language at the time. I got a few music books from Brazil and started looking for the records that were recommended in the books. Some of those were already massively overpriced (all the Tropicalia stuff from the late 1960s), but much to my surprise, as you ventured into the mid-70s to mid-80s, a lot of the great records were cheap as chips. These were records that were never covered outside of Brazil, a lot of them being private pressings by local artists which often came autographed. I felt I had struck gold on an uncharted island. Since then, some of these albums have got more exposure and have now doubled or tripled in price and counting. When it comes to Brazilian records, I'm three or four steps ahead of European collectors. Dealing with Brazilian sellers has always been a great experience for me, and since my name is feminine over there, a lot of them thought I was an attractive young girl mystifyingly buying men's music. I got a ton of discounts and a few love notes. What can I say, a huge win for the Morelli. My Brazil collection can be found here: rateyourmusic.com/collection/Shaolin_Master/stag/brazil/1

I bought the Arkells - Jackson Square CD years agoooooo (2008 maybe?) and Dine Alone Records had it bundled with a t-shirt/pins/stickers and also a 7" single that was limited to 300 copies. I didn't even own a record player at the time I got this. I've seen it sell locally for $150.00 but normally on discogs it goes for $50-60.
I probably bought the CD for $10 - so a little profit.

My old boss dumped a couple of milk crates of records on me about 10 years ago, most of which was 70s schlock (Chris de burgh, eagles etc), but also had 3-4 who bootlegs and an MFSL version of dark side of the moon, which apparently goes for over $100. I might as well sell it, since I of course do not like the pink Floyd.

I bought the Who Feels Love vinyl for £5 when it came out (no idea why tbh) but that seems to go for about £20 now so a profit 24 years in the making awaits.

A good friend of mine is pretty knowledgeable on Brazilian music and when Tropicalia came on the radar was in Sao Paolo - a little ahead of the pack- twice a year buying and selling records. I don’t know if he still has Brazilian stock and how much outside of Tropicalia, but I’ll ask him and if worth it and if you want, can put you in touch?

He said he has a good friend who is retired and spends half his time in Brazil looking for records. His Discogs handle is sean1956cricket and he ships from the UK. He may have pieces that interest you. He likes an obscurity apparently and his listings have sound files.

I do know sean from Discogs, he's one of the few European sellers who consistently has stuff I'm looking for, but his prices are always on the (very) high side, and shipping to mainland Europe from the UK has become a pain in the arse after Brexit. Feel free to give your mate my RYM or my discogs handle "Simonemo" if he wants to get in touch in the future. Speaking of which, I went to a record fair in Rotterdam a couple of weeks ago and finally met in person the man/the myth Mr Bongo himself, the man who single-handedly invented the concept of overpricing Brazilian records Just kidding, I got a good deal from him - I probably got the only underpriced LP in the entire fair. I was also surprised to see a young lad from the Netherlands fork out €280 for two Gal Costa records without blinking an eye, while I haggled over a €50 LP like a Moroccan camel vendor for a good half an hour There are three or four Brazilian LPs that I really want that are at around €100-120 but I imagine they'll go up in price and become much more sought after once collectors discover their story. But at some point I want to move on and focus on other scenes that are luckily still affordable, like Spanish psych, which I got into when I lived in Malaga. Man, if I could fill at least one Kallax cubicle for every country whose music I like - one for Denmark, Spain, Japan, Germany, Greece, France, Australia, Sweden, Soviet Union etc, a couple of cubicles each for Italy, UK and at least three each for US and Brazil... I'd die a happy man.

I forgot to mention in this post that back in 2010 Brassland reissued the first two National albums as very limited editions on coloured vinyl. I bought a copy of both. I don’t actually like the first album at all, so had a check recently what it was going for and was well surprised to see none on sale and the last one went for ££ so I stuck mine on at higher than anyone had sold it for. Just sold this morning for €275 😎
